Description:
The Resident Director position can be quite overwhelming for a new professional, as evidenced by the continued challenge of retaining entry-level staff in the housing and residence life profession (St. Onge, Ellett et al., 2008) Instead of getting stressed about all of your job responsibilities, this course will help you to develop skills to assist in the prioritization and time management of tasks, as well as provide tools to assist you in organizing your schedule and office systems. Personal and professional balance and relationships will be discussed, and each participant will develop an action plan for professional development.

As a new professional, you may be asked to respond to a variety of crisis situations on your campus. Having a general knowledge of crisis management is important but it is even more critical that you develop the skills to respond to a variety of crisis in a confident manner. Understanding the components of a good crisis management plan will provide you with the tools to respond confidently. This session hopes to provide participants an opportunity to create a template for a crisis management plan for your campus that can be applicable to almost any crisis.

Multicultural Competence in Higher Education

Description:
This course is designed to help individuals establish a common language and understanding as it pertains to issues of multicultural competence, to explore campus climate issues as it pertains to organizational culture and will allow participants the ability to engage in personal exploration in relation to power, privilege, mattering and marginalization. Students will explore their own identity and how it influences their experiences on their campuses and others experiences of them. Students will be expected to be familiar with portions of Multicultural Competencies in Student Affairs by Pope, Reynolds and Mueller (2004) prior to the course, as assigned homework.
