Description:
This course will assist Student Affairs professionals who grapple with current technological trends affecting today's student. This course will serve as a survey of various technology-related issues affecting Student Affairs Professionals including Online Social Networks, Image Management, Copyright Laws, and improving productivity through the use of technology.
Participants will be provided numerous resources and recommendations on how best to proceed with educating students on contemporary technology issues.
Course Outline:
The first week will focus on the topic of online social networks. While Facebook and Myspace serve as a great vehicle for building community they also bring about numerous liabilities that many professionals are addressing across the country. This week's presentation will focus on the issues presented by these programs related to student behavior and also future image management problems for students. In addition, strategies for addressing online concerns will be shared to correct problematic behavior.
The second week will focus primarily on the area of copyright law and the Internet. Many students are either uninformed or choose to ignore current copyright laws regarding the downloading of music, video, and pirated software. Participants will be exposed to copyright basics as well as methods to communicate copyright concerns to students.
The third week will focus on the topic of increasing administrative efficiency through the use of current technology. Finding a way to muddle through the increased amount of e-mail we receive in the student affairs profession is a real concern along with the ability to collect data and information on our effectiveness. This week will focus on methods, programs, and habits that can enhance personal and departmental productivity.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Illustrate online image management concerns for faculty, staff, and students
- Recognize technology related copyright violations and educate students on the dangers and opportunities present on the Internet
- Propose methods of improving personal and departmental efficiency through increased usage of technology
- Research future technology concerns in order to stay current
Participant Expectations::
Participants should plan to spend approximately 3 to 4 hours per week in this course. This will include time to read materials, complete on-line exercises and surveys and participate in asynchronous on-line discussions. Participants will need to log on for course content that will be posted weekly. In addition participants will need to respond to questions posted on the discussion board each week. As the discussion board is asynchronous, students may check in and post at their convenience. This learning tool will be an important part of participant's learning experience.
Instructor Bio:
Peter Trentacoste is the Director of University Housing at Northern Kentucky University. Over the past several years, Peter has researched and presented on numerous issues related to technology and often serves as a bridge between the different worlds of information technology and student affairs. In addition, Peter has consulted with several campuses on the issue of online image management and how to best educate students and staff on the topic. Prior to arriving at Northern Kentucky University, Peter worked at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Peter received his M.A. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Student Affairs in Higher Education.
